Fall 2026 top 10: Steel Ball Run, Apothecary Diaries and Black Clover lead, with a Must-watch, Safe bet or Wildcard verdict on every single entry.

Fall 2026 top 10: Steel Ball Run, Apothecary Diaries and Black Clover lead, with a Must-watch, Safe bet or Wildcard verdict on every single entry.
Key Points
- The top three are all returning series, and all three earn their return for different reasons.
- Only two entries are genuinely new; the rest reward existing fans or a short catch-up.
- Verdicts are simple: Must-watch means clear the schedule, Safe bet means a reliable weekly watch, Wildcard means high upside with risk.
- Premiere dates and platforms below are the verified launch details, not rumours.
- If you watch only three shows this season, watch numbers 1, 2 and 4.
The top 10
1. Steel Ball Run — Must-watch
The season’s defining premiere. David Production’s weekly run from 25 September, covering stages 2 and 3 in 11 episodes, finally gives Hirohiko Araki’s Part 7 the pace it deserves. Start with the March first-stage special, then settle in for Friday episodes that build rivalries stage by stage.
2. The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 — Must-watch
Maomao leaves the palace, and the series gets bigger without losing its brain. OLM’s split-cour season from 2 October, with part 2 in April 2027 and a film in December, is the autumn’s smartest mystery watch — provided you start at season 1.
3. Black Clover Season 2 — Must-watch
A return after more than five years, resuming at episode 171 on 3 October with Studio Pierrot animating again. The Spade Kingdom Raid finally continues toward a conclusion, and for returning fans there is no bigger comeback this season, full stop.
4. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 — Must-watch
Studio Trigger’s standalone follow-up drops all ten episodes on Netflix on 20 October, with a new cast and story. Directed by Kai Ikarashi, it follows washed-up edgerunner Weak Kingsley and three new leads — no homework required, maximum visual impact, and the easiest binge of the season for viewers short on time and patience.
5. Reincarnated as a Sword Season 2 — Safe bet
Fran and Teacher return after four years, with C2C animating and HIDIVE streaming from the 30 September advance debut. It is warm, steady fantasy that rewards a short first-season catch-up and delivers a reliable weekly episode without drama or confusion.
6. Blue Box Season 2 — Safe bet
Badminton, a love triangle and a gentle pace return to Netflix on 4 October, now from studio Electric Circus. Season 2 will not shock you, and that is its strength: a dependable, good-hearted weekly watch for viewers who liked season 1’s balance of sport and romance.
7. Firefly Wedding — Wildcard
David Production’s new romance premiered 9 October on Crunchyroll with no prior season to lean on. That is both the excitement and the risk: a fresh premise, a strong studio, and everything still to prove over its opening episodes this autumn.
8. Overgeared — Wildcard
J.C.Staff’s new fantasy from 27 September brings a gamer-blacksmith premise to Crunchyroll’s lineup. It could become the season’s slow-burn discovery, or it could settle into comfortable genre routine. Either way, it starts at episode 1 for everyone, with no catch-up needed.
9. Ranma 1/2 Season 3 — Safe bet
The classic remake continues on 3 October on Netflix, from MAPPA, with martial-arts comedy that knows exactly what it is. Returning viewers get more of a beloved formula, polished for a new audience, while newcomers should start with the remake’s first season, not this one.
10. Magic Knight Rayearth — Wildcard
A 1990s favourite returns on 7 October on Crunchyroll in a new version from E&H Production, reimagining CLAMP’s magical-girl classic. Nostalgia alone will carry its first episode; whether the revival earns a new generation depends on how boldly it reintroduces its fantasy to viewers who never saw the original.
Why it matters
A top 10 in a sequel season is really a test of trust: which returns deserve your week, and which new shows deserve your gamble? This list answers with three must-watches at the top, a solid middle of safe bets, and three wildcards that could climb the ranking by December. Revisit it at season’s end — the wildcards are where the surprises live.
