Fall 2026 Anime Digest: Week 1

Fall 2026 did not open. It piled up: four major returns in nine days, before most new shows had aired once.

Steel Ball Run set the tone on a Friday, eleven weekly episodes promised, a race already in motion. Five days later, Fran and Teacher returned. Then the double-header: Maomao’s third season on Friday 2 October, Asta’s return at episode 171 on Saturday 3 October.

Key Points

• Steel Ball Run stages 2–3 began weekly on Netflix, 25 September 2026.
• Sword Season 2 opened early on ABEMA, 30 September.
• The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 premiered on 2 October; Black Clover Season 2 on 3 October.
• Next: Firefly Wedding, Blue Box S2, Edgerunners 2 (20 Oct).

The opening stretch, in order

Nine days, four returns, four waits: six months since Steel Ball Run’s special, four years since Sword’s first season, a year since Maomao’s last case, five and a half years since Black Clover’s episode 170.

Primary sources: Netflix, HIDIVE and Crunchyroll.

Why it matters

Week 1 proved the season’s thesis — and set its trap: four comebacks in nine days means the fifth premiere must shout to be heard. The test now: can a new series like Firefly Wedding break through a schedule that front-loaded its nostalgia?
